Shri Dasondhi Ram Birji

A Light of Eternity

It was an auspicious day when Shri Rala Ram Kapoor and Shrimati Yashoda Kapoor were blessed with a son on 15th May 1900 namely Dasondhi Ram and has married to Smt.Chameli Devi. He joined PWD deptt.of State but quite often went out to help people in distress. In view of his unique and selfless services, his Highness Maharaja Bhupinder Singh exempted him from his compulsory attendance in the office and free access to the Royal Court. He was honoured with title of Fakhre-e-Riyasat. His boundless zeal to serve all, earned him the sobriquet- BIRJI and was probably the most well known figure of Patiala next only to the Royal Highness. He was a Messiah of the down trodden and of sufferings/dying and dead during his teen age. It is believed that on his wedding day, when somebody told about an unclaimed dead body, he left the wedding ceremony to cremate the body. Young boys who smoked stealthily threw cigarettes. People did not report the loss of children to police and were found at Birji’s house. Young boys did not dare to see cinema during school times and girls did not go bare headed in his presence. He extended all help to the victims of accidents, washed the wounds of lepers and did not hesitate to help victims of communicable diseases as small pox/bubonic plague. He organised several chhabeels in the rush at pilgrimage places as Hardwar/Kurukshetra and regulated traffic at fairs/festivals with Birji Sewa Samiti. Like Jesus carrying his cross to Calvary, he carried unclaimed dead bodies on his shoulders or in a barrow and gave them dignified cremation or burial and he rendered service to no fewer than35000 corpses. As a gesture of Birjit, SD Kumar Sabha named its institutions after this self saint. At his depart from this world on 10th Sept, 1979, the whole Patiala virtually wept which was a history of the state. Hence the generation to come would scarcely believe that such a man as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth. Sabha is proud of his selfless deeds for the cause of humanity.
